Itinerary

Day by day

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation Gain: 1,490m to 3,000m (4,890ft to 9,840ft)
Hiking Time: 7 hours

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate, where you'll complete registration before stepping into the lush embrace of the rainforest. The trail winds steadily upward through dense vegetation, alive with birdsong and occasional glimpses of wildlife. By late afternoon, you'll arrive at Machame Camp—your first high-altitude home on the mountain—where dinner and a well-earned rest await beneath the stars.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Elevation Gain: 3,000m to 3,840m (9,840ft to 12,600ft)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours

Today's trek leads you through the moorland zone, where the landscape transforms into a world of giant lobelias and otherworldly vegetation. You'll cross the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the highest volcanic calderas in the world, with breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro's glaciers rising in the distance. The terrain opens up dramatically, offering your first sweeping vistas of the mountain's icy crown.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840m → 4,630m (12,600ft → 15,190ft), then descent to 3,950m (12,960ft)
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours

A challenging but essential day for acclimatization takes you up to the towering Lava Tower, a dramatic black rock formation standing sentinel over the alpine desert. Here, you'll gain valuable altitude before descending into the lush Barranco Valley—a classic "climb high, sleep low" strategy. Barranco Camp awaits below, nestled amid giant groundsels with the sheer face of the Barranco Wall looming overhead, promising adventure for the morning ahead.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley

Elevation Gain: 3,950m → 4,200m (12,960ft → 13,780ft)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Today brings one of the most exhilarating sections of the entire trek—scrambling up the famous Barranco Wall. Despite its imposing appearance, the climb is manageable with steady hands and sure footing, and the views from the top are absolutely worth the effort. From there, the trail dips and rises through the rugged Karanga Valley, where you'll camp surrounded by towering peaks and deep ravines, feeling the summit drawing ever closer.

Day 5: Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp

Elevation Gain: 4,200m → 4,680m (13,780ft → 15,350ft)
Hiking Time: 4 hours

Today's trek is relatively short but significant, leading you to Barafu Camp—your final base before summit night. Situated on a rocky ridge, this camp offers sweeping views of the plains below and the peak still to come. The remainder of the day is dedicated to resting, hydrating, and preparing mentally and physically for the midnight ascent ahead.

Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation Gain: 4,680m → 5,895m (15,350ft → 19,340ft), then descent to 3,100m (10,170ft)
Hiking Time: 10-15 hours

Long before dawn, you'll rise for the ultimate challenge—the push to Uhuru Peak. By headlamp, you'll climb steep scree slopes in the cold darkness, step by step drawing closer to the roof of Africa. Reaching Stella Point as the first light paints the sky, you'll push on to Uhuru Peak, where glaciers shimmer and the world stretches out beneath you. After soaking in the moment, the long descent begins, carrying you down through shifting landscapes to the forested comfort of Mweka Camp, where celebration and sleep finally converge.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Transfer to Arusha

After breakfast, the trail leads you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your Kilimanjaro journey officially concludes with the presentation of summit certificates. Emerging from the mountain's embrace, you'll drive back to Arusha and the welcoming comfort of The Outpost Lodge—a peaceful haven to rest weary legs, celebrate your accomplishment, and begin processing the magnitude of standing atop Africa.

Day 8: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Maramboi Tented Lodge

Your safari experience launches in Tarangire National Park, where towering baobabs stand sentinel over herds of elephants roaming the rugged terrain. Game drives wind through acacia woodlands and open grasslands, with the life-giving Tarangire River serving as a magnet for wildlife throughout the day. From majestic tuskers to predators lurking in the shadows, every moment reveals another layer of this remarkable ecosystem.

Days 9-11: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

Accommodation: Serengeti Katikati Camp

Journey to the legendary Serengeti, where two full days of game drives reveal the extraordinary diversity of this iconic ecosystem. Depending on the season, you may witness the dramatic spectacle of the Great Migration—massive herds of wildebeest and zebra surging across the plains. Keep your camera ready for encounters with lions, cheetahs, leopards, and an endless array of wildlife thriving in this ancient landscape.

Day 12: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Craterongoro to Serengeti National Park

Accommodation: Ngorongoro Kuhama Camp

Enjoy one final morning game drive in the Serengeti, soaking in the endless plains and wildlife encounters before beginning your journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. En route, consider a fascinating stop at Olduvai Gorge—often called the "Cradle of Mankind"—where some of humanity's earliest ancestral remains were discovered. Continue to your camp overlooking the crater rim, where stunning views and a warm welcome await.

Day 13: Ngorongoro Crater

Accommodation: Country Lodge

Today, you'll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater—often called Africa's Garden of Eden—for a full-day game drive through one of the most wildlife-rich landscapes on earth. The crater floor unfolds like a living diorama: lions dozing on the grasslands, rhinos grazing undisturbed near the marshes, elephants ambling across the plains, and hippos surfacing in the shimmering lakes. Every turn reveals another breathtaking scene, making this a fitting finale to your safari adventures before returning to the comfort of Country Lodge.

Day 14: Lake Manyara to Arusha

One last adventure awaits before your journey concludes. After breakfast, venture into Lake Manyara National Park, where groundwater forests give way to open grasslands and the shimmering soda lake itself. Keep your binoculars ready for the park's legendary birdlife—over 400 species call this place home—and scan the acacia branches for the elusive tree-climbing lions that made Manyara famous. With memories still fresh, the drive returns you to Arusha, where your Tanzanian safari comes to a close—but the stories will last a lifetime.
